Why Pictures?
When we first came up with our concept of sending weekly news stories alongside teaching ideas for schools, we wondered – how else we could make this engaging? We understood that not all children enjoy reading – or even can read, but we knew we wanted our content to be accessible to all children… Enter: ‘Picture-News’!
We are passionate not just teaching about the news but also, all of the many things that children can learn from the news. Children are naturally interested in the world around them but we feel a lot of what’s being taught is from the past! Through choosing an interesting image alongside the story we feel we can help children to connect with the wider world, provoke intrigue and get them asking questions. According to MindTools, 65% of us our visual learners and prefer learning through images, pictures can do lots of different things; tell stories, help explain things; excite us, engage us – to name a few! As one of our Heads from the Isle of Wight comments;
“Receiving such material on a weekly basis as a stimulus for debate around current affairs and personal values is exciting and promises to increase the standard of children’s knowledge in an instant resource”.
Our aim is to get as many schools as possible teaching their children about what’s going on in the world as possible and to finish, in the words of Walt Disney,
“Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.”
