Curriculum for Excellence - Picture News supporting the Four Capacities
Confident individuals
Give children opportunities to learn about themselves and their peers. Discover interests, unlocking drive and ambition, and achieve success whilst learning about the world that we live in. Develop and communicate their own ideas and beliefs and learn to respect the ideas and beliefs of others.
Successful learners
An abundance of opportunities are provided for debate, building children’s speaking and listening skills and vocabulary. Give children enthusiasm and motivation by providing opportunities to learn through news stories that inspire them. Develop independence, confidence and resilience.
Responsible citizens
Expose children to a range of current issues – national and global - including political, religious, cultural, environmental, social, moral, spiritual. Develop their own ideas and opinions. If they want to make a difference, they have to have the confidence to speak out.
Effective contributors
They must develop resilience. The news stories are all current meaning children can influence and bring about change. If at first, they do not succeed, develop ideas further, do not give up! Opportunities are provided to extend learning, allowing children to take control, solve problems, set themselves high standards, ask questions, research then explain and communicate their ideas.
