Using Picture News in EYFS – Floor books by Lisa Lodge

We were very impressed with the Early Years Picture News floor book at Stockbridge Village Primary School. Each week they record the children’s thoughts and feelings about the current news story.  The children then take on the weekly challenges in the different areas of provision.

Using the news story about people deciding to stop sending money to the RNLI, the children have responded with ideas of how they could raise money. They have made their own posters to help the RNLI raise more money and have also made and tested their own boats.
This featured a news story about how children at all primary schools will now learn how to call the emergency services. It got the children thinking about when they needed first aid treatment. They made their own hospital first aid role play area and independently made notes of all the accidents that came into their hospital.
After learning from the news that parts of the Amazon Rainforest are on fire, the children found out what it’s like in a rainforest. They drew and labelled their own journey through the rainforest and created their own rainforest paintings. They’ve also discussed together the new vocabulary they have learnt from the news story.
