We asked the Picture News team for their top tips for making a showstopping display in school. Keep reading for display inspiration (with some examples from schools), and a handy free Picture News display resource to transform your boards!
Our top tips for school displays

1. Include an engaging centre piece
No matter the subject focus of your display, an engaging centre piece is always important. Picture News schools often use their weekly resources to create news-based displays, showcasing current stories, with the posters as a focal point to demonstrate what’s happening in the world! An vibrant focus can capture the attention of your school community, from pupils to visitors, and encourage engagement with your display content.
2. Summarise and consolidate learning and ideas
Whether explaining the British values or highlighting a topical theme, displays can reflect the productive learning that has taken place in your setting. Often, displays can be great in classrooms for pupils to refer back to whilst working or during discussions, and reinforce important concepts or ideas explored in school. You might like to use post-its, written on by children sharing their ideas or responses, or include laminated thought bubbles for children to write ideas on, and update regularly.
3. Involve the children
We’re big believers in pupil-led learning, and you can implement this approach for your displays too! From involving children in deciding which content to include, to making their work the focus, displays can develop children’s engagement with the topics you cover. Include an interactive display for children to use regularly to express their ideas, so that they can learn from each other. You might like to use the suggestions from point 2 to do this!
4. Think about location
Displays are all over schools, and those in communal areas can be important for highlighting your school values, ideas and updates. Eye-catching displays in shared spaces can appeal to your whole school community, families, and visitors. Why not create a news-based communal display? This is a great way to engage everyone in school with the wider world. It can be a talking point for all!
5. Make it interchangeable
Keeping displays fresh is important, and choosing a news-based display can help. News displays can be updated regularly, to reflect current events, children’s ideas and valuable reflections. Picture News resources support this, with a new focus each week, vibrant resources and prompts to include!
School display spotlight – Picture News schools!
Picture News schools transform their weekly resources, using them to produce informative, eye-catching displays in their settings.
