Every October, schools and communities across the UK come together to mark Black History Month—an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of the Black community. In 2025, the chosen theme is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride,’ encouraging everyone to reflect on the positive contributions and enduring spirit of Black communities throughout history. What Is Black History Month? Black History Month has been observed in the UK since the 1980s. It aims to recognise the history, achievements, and significant contributions of Black people in Britain. The 2025 theme, ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride,’ highlights stories of strength, progress, and resilience. This important month is a chance to learn more about Black history, challenge racism, and celebrate diversity within all communities. Spotlight: The West Indian Sports and Social Club in Manchester The West Indian Sports and Social Club, located in Moss Side, Manchester, stands as a landmark of community, heritage, and pride. Founded in 1953 by members of the Windrush generation who arrived from the Caribbean, the club became a safe haven—a place where families could gather, play cricket and football, share food, dance, and celebrate their culture. Over the years, the club has welcomed notable visitors, including Nelson Mandela, and continues to be central to community life. It hosts weddings, parties, and other celebrations, nurturing a sense of identity and belonging among its members. Challenges Facing the Club Current plans to build around 200 new homes near the club have raised concerns among community members. Issues such as increased noise or restricted space could threaten activities at the club. Community leaders and residents are speaking out, voicing the importance of protecting this key historical and cultural space while considering new housing needs. Why Is the Club Important? The West Indian Sports and Social Club is more than just a building. It is a place of pride and inclusion, especially for young people who learn about their roots and local history by attending events and activities. The club illustrates the importance of having spaces where heritage is celebrated, cultural stories are passed down, and all generations can feel connected. The continued existence of the club is a testament to the value of community spaces that support diversity, respect, and mutual understanding. Classroom Discussion: Pride in Our Communities Reflecting on the example of the West Indian Sports and Social Club, students and teachers can discuss what makes a community feel proud of its past. Consider the role of people, lasting buildings, shared stories, cherished traditions, and community achievements. How do these elements help us build a sense of belonging? The discussion could also explore prior knowledge of Black History Month and encourage students to watch educational videos such as the story of Walter Tull, considering what lessons can be drawn from inspirational figures in Black history. In your own community, what places or traditions make you feel proud? How can we remember and honour the people and places that have shaped us? Collaboration and shared pride can help ensure these stories are never forgotten. Designing a Community Building Imagine you could design a building for everyone in your community. Would it be a place for fun, learning, celebration, or welcome? Students are encouraged to draw their ideas, label different spaces, and include features that make their building special—perhaps using eco-friendly designs, creating an art wall, or including a dedicated youth space. Mutual Respect and Tolerance The story of the West Indian Sports and Social Club demonstrates the impact of mutual respect and tolerance. Created by members of the Windrush generation, the club celebrates cultural heritage and supports racial equality, ensuring all people feel welcome and valued. Reflection A community is more than physical structures—it is made up of shared stories, the sense of belonging, and the pride community members take in their history. By learning, discussing, and reflecting together, we all help to protect and celebrate what makes our communities unique and resilient.
