Staff and pupils at Welford-on-Avon Primary School have been busy making the packs their own, taking the Take Home resource one step further… What is the Picture News Take Home resource? You may have spotted the Take Home resource, found at the end of each Picture News pack. This is designed to help you develop your home-school links, by extending discussion and learning about the news out of the classroom and into the homes of your school community, engaging families in current affairs. Each Take Home resource includes the week’s Big Question, along with some further discussion prompts for people at home to discuss together. Teacher Charlotte Bird explains how Welford-on-Avon Primary are making the most of their weekly Picture News Take Home resources: "We have been using Picture News for a while now and this academic year have particularly focused on children contributing with the Take Home Picture News. We have designed Picture News Contributor stickers and these are huge in motivating children to do a Take Home news. However, I want to continue to promote this in the upcoming academic year... To encourage children to regularly complete a Take Home news, they each have a ‘loyalty’ card that is dated when they return the Take Home news. When children bring back certain numbers of Take Home news during the year, they are awarded a certificate that says ‘I am a Bronze/Silver/Gold/ Platinum Level Take Home News Contributor’. We have had nearly 50% of the school bring a Take Home News contribution to school following sharing the story with their family! Each teacher has a small stamper that we are stamping the children’s loyalty cards with - the children get so excited to share they have a Take Home news and want their card stamped!"
