Symbol-Friendly Organisations use Widgit Symbols to help ensure individuals of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can engage in everyday experiences, regardless of their ability. 14 million children in the UK have long-term Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), and can benefit from having access to Widgit Symbols to communicate and receive information. At Picture News, we’ve been producing our Picture News Symbols resources for several years, but now, we’ve been recognised as a Symbol-Friendly Organisation ! Using Widgit Symbols within Picture News Symbols resources helps us to ensure the needs of our schools are met , including pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), cognitive or learning needs, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and more. This means we can support as many pupils to learn from what’s happening in the world as possible! What we’ll be doing as a Symbol-Friendly Organisation: · Continuing to create weekly Picture News Symbols resources , sharing what’s happening in the world using accessible symbols. · Producing additional SEND resources (including Widgit Symbols) to enhance Picture News learning. · Providing training for SEND teaching staff, SLT, and anyone wanting to learn more about Picture News Symbols. The resources include written sentences and symbol sentences , and are sent to subscribed settings in PowerPoint format every Friday morning. Picture News Symbols develops learners’ understanding of what’s happening in the world with reflective open questions, sensory ideas, and picture resources for use in education settings, alongside at home learning resources.
