As I am in the process of researching careers after my degree, I thought that some time here would be a perfect way to mix my interest in education and creativity. I’m excited to tell you all about it… The story we were working on this week focused on the incredible sporting achievement of Luke Littler, who won the World Darts Championship at only 17. I began my week by researching more about this story, then thinking of suitable and thought-provoking questions to add to the resource. //b667e803ea5399501dccf24f2b415eee.cdn.bubble.io/f1737975605198x668013060224177360/richtext_content.jpeg Next, I started brainstorming tasks for the pack. I wanted to create a task surrounding goal setting, as Luke’s achievement is very inspiring. Keeping with the theme of darts, I had the idea to make a model for goal setting on a dart board. This is not only a visual aid for achieving goals, but a way for the children to be creative in making and decorating the board themselves. During my lunch break, I had a stroll around the historic city of Ripon - where the Picture News office is located. Having never visited the city before, I was pleasantly surprised. Here are a few photos of the historic cathedral. //b667e803ea5399501dccf24f2b415eee.cdn.bubble.io/f1737976793915x613303515980863700/richtext_content.jpeg //b667e803ea5399501dccf24f2b415eee.cdn.bubble.io/f1737976795148x846566153989280800/richtext_content.jpeg Proofreading the resources is an extremely important job. This includes checking for spelling or layout issues. It’s vital that the resources are checked before they are sent out to the schools, so that the children and teachers can get the most out of them. The Picture News team have been extremely welcoming to me, showing me how they work on a day-to-day basis. On Thursday, I joined them for their meeting where they discussed plans for the next few weeks. This involved catching up with the other members of the team who were not in the office. It’s interesting to see how they work together efficiently. Another task which I enjoyed was researching journalistic writing. I have always been interested in journalism and telling stories in that way. I began to research the different methods that journalists use to report the news for different occasions and audiences. This research helps the Picture News team to create resources for schools based on this topic. I had a lovely few days with the team, especially because the work experience did not really feel like I was doing work because it’s something I am very interested in. This has given me an insight into working ‘behind-the-scenes’ in education, creating resources for teachers, which is a job I could really see myself doing in the future. I have to say ‘thank you’ to the team for letting me help here - I have really enjoyed it. Thanks for reading this blog post! I hope you find the Picture News resources beneficial for your class.
